Your real estate agent can be your best friend or biggest liability when it comes to purchasing a home. I'd like to be the former! Let me help you do your research. Here are some things that I recommend considering when choosing an agent.
Write everything down. Compile a list of questions to ask an agent when you first make contact. Your agent is working for you; it makes sense to interview them first. Check out qualifications, education, knowledge of the area, future vacation plans that might affect you, and commission rates.
For more questions to ask your agent, see http://www.naeba.org/buying/questions.htm
Don't play phone tag. Find an agent that has a compatible schedule.
Use referrals. The best agents usually have previous customers singing their praises. Ask to speak to some of the agent's happy clientele. Find out the agent's strengths and weaknesses. Ask your friends about agents they have used.
Make sure you know what qualifications you are looking for:
1. A Real Estate agent has a license in the state that they practice.
2. A Realtor is an agent that is additionally certified by the National Association of Realtors.
3. A Real Estate Broker has had additional training and holds a different license than agents.

Put more emphasis in the individual agent rather than the agency. Make sure you trust your agent, not just the company to which he/she belongs. You will likely form a personal relationship with your agent, so make sure he/she can deliver what you need.
